The problem of bad roads in the country has become an embarrassing stigma. In many parts of this country, normal interaction has been frustrated by bad roads. Vehicle owners are in distress as their vehicles are not used optimally. Moreover, the very many potholes and detours mean that vehicles keep breaking down so that on many of Nigeria's roads emergency mechanics have sprung up to assist stranded commuters sometimes with disastrous consequences.

South Korean court upholds motion to impeach President Park Geun-hye
Kim Hong-Ji | ReutersThe last South Korean leader to face impeachment was President Roh Moo-hyun in 2004, but the Constitutional Court had rejected the motion.
Unlike Roh's case however, public opinion played a key role in Park's dismissal. A Gallup Korea poll conducted last week revealed 77 percent of respondents were in favor of impeachment, placing a heavy burden on the Court to cater to public demand, according to strategists.
Since news of the scandal emerged in October, Asia's fourth-largest economy has been rocked by mass street demonstrations as citizens demanded Park's resignation.
Non-payment of N541bn loan: Three banks take over Etisalat Nigeria...Source Vanguard News

Ekwujuru LAGOS—THREE Nigerian banks and their foreign affiliates,
yesterday, took over Etisalat Nigeria for allegedly failing to repay a
loan of over N541bn it secured from the consortium in 2015.
A source at NCC confided in Vanguard that the commission tried its best to ensure the situation didn’t degenerate to taking over of the telecoms company but that pressures from the banks became so intense it had to allow the action. The source said the issue had lingered for a while, with the NCC believing it could provide some middle ground for both parties to come to a truce but unfortunately the banks feared that inability to recover the loan could expose them to the Asset Management Company of Nigeria, AMCON, which had been demanding immediate cut-down on the rate of their non-performing loans. The loan facility totalling $1.72 billion (about N541.8 billion) involving a foreign-backed guaranty bond, was for Etisalat to turn around its network and expand its operations in Nigeria. However, the banks claimed that Etisalat had failed to service the debt as agreed since 2016. They subsequently reported Etisalat to the banking sector regulator, the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, and its communications sector counterpart, the NCC. Our NCC source disclosed that Etisalat blamed its inability to fulfil its obligation to the banks on the current economic recession in Nigeria. All attempts to get Etisalat to confirm the story proved abortive after several calls and text messages to relevant officials of the company. However, reports are that Etisalat Nigeria is in talks with the local banks to renegotiate terms of the $1.2 billion loan it took four years ago to expand its network in the country after missed payments. Though the banks are under pressure to recover their money, Vanguard learned that loan restructuring is being re-negotiated as there was still a considerable gap between what Etisalat offered as new payment terms and what the banks want. A source in one of the affected banks told Vanguard that the banks could not afford a long-stretched re-payment plan in 2017 as the loan had been restructured twice since 2015. The banks are also said to be under pressure due to similar restructuring burden imposed on them by loan failures in the oil and gas sector, as well as general commerce. The bank source said they were most unhappy with Etisalat because the telecom giant could not present an independently verifiable proof that their volume of business went down by the magnitude that could put significant loan repayments in jeopardy. Emirates Telecommunications, EMT Group trading as Etisalat, own a 40 per cent stake in its Nigerian affiliate, which accounts for about 3.7 per cent of the group’s revenue in 2013. Ibrahim Dikko, Vice President for Regulatory Affairs at Etisalat Nigeria, said Etisalat missed payments due to an economic downturn in Nigeria, currency devaluation and dollar shortages on the country’s interbank market. â€Å“We are in discussions with our bankers and have been for quite a while. They have not taken over the business and we are hoping that we can resolve the issue and find a way to renegotiate terms,†Dikko said. Etisalat Nigeria signed a $1.2 billion medium-term facility with 13 Nigerian banks in 2013, which it used to refinance an existing $650 million loan and fund a modernisation of its network. Dikko said the business performed well, last year, and was still in profit at the level of EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest, Tax, Depreciation and Amortisation), while loan repayments had been up to date â€Å“until recently.†He said the company was now looking at â€Å“all the optionsâ€, which could include converting the loan into Naira, but did not want to anticipate the outcome of talks with the lenders. Several other firms took out dollar loans in 2013 to expand at a time Nigeria was seen as an attractive investment prospect. The economy was growing at seven per cent, with a stable currency and rising oil prices. But now, the country has been running short of dollars as oil revenues have fallen along with the price of crude, pushing the economy into its first recession in a quarter of a century. That has weakened the Naira, which trades at a lower level in the black market than the official interbank rate against the dollar. The dollar shortages have made it difficult for local companies to get access to foreign currency and as a result, some have struggled to repay dollar-denominated debts with several lenders having restructured loans to oil firms. Etisalat is Nigeria’s fourth largest telecoms operator, with about 21 million subscribers as at January, 2017, according to the NCC. It commenced business in Nigeria in 2009.

Over a thousand Igbo students flood Abuja in solidarity with Buhari
Addressing the students
at the Unity Fountain in Abuja, President of Ohaneze Ndi’gbo Students
Forum, Comrade Osisioma Osikenyi Igwe said Ndigbo made grave mistakes in
the past, but are not prepared to repeat same mistakes.
He said Ndi’gbo students and youths have come to the inevitable
conclusion to embrace change collectively.
Igwe urged Southeasterners, particularly, MASSOB and IPOB who are
incensed about a Biafran republic to extinguish the idea, urging them
to now devote their energies in working assiduously to support the
APC-led government of President Buhari to place the region on pedestal
to fully consummate the niceties of politics and governance at God’s
appointed time.
He said, “We have chosen to become part of the change agents, by
impressing on our people to sight the bright future Nigeria offers
every ethnic nationality, most especially Igbo nation under the
God-fearing and de-tribalized leader, President Buhari. We must bury our
mundane thoughts that have tethered us to retrogressive sentiments for
ages.
The students apologized to President Buhari, the national leadership of
the APC and all stakeholders of the party for the embarrassment caused
them by the threats of MASSOB and IPOB to disrupt the Pro-Buhari rally
in Awka.
He said the students are confident that such misguided thoughts and
utterances would never be heard from the Southeast anymore.
Igwe said people of Igbo extraction often lament marginalization and
injustice, but hardly spare time to reflect and arrive at genuine,
cogent measures to extricate themselves from these entanglements.
He said, “We are strangely happy in the euphoria of being blinded by our
foibles. When we contemplate any remedy, it is usually half-baked and
poorly articulated, manifest in the frequent retreat into our cocoons,
with loud gospels of separatism. These wrong approaches have failed to
give us solace, heal our wounds and cement ties with our Nigerian
brothers to work for the prosperity of Nigeria.
He said, “in the years past, we have been misled and enslaved by our
people, who exploited our innocence and complacence to market several
unfounded and unprofitable sentiments, which poisoned our minds towards
our beloved country, Nigeria. Sadly, no one can point to a single reward
we’ve got from these wild adventures from our years of silence; our
months of endurance and decades of antagonism.
“Over time too, we have silently watched elders of our land; our leaders
indulge in excesses that have led us to wrong steps and decisions,
which have disappointingly and continuously nurtured the passion of hate
against us, as a race in Nigeria. It has rather expanded the frontiers
of enmity between us and other ethnic nationalities in Nigeria. We
cannot continue in this manner and we have taken up the challenge to
also lead the path for our elders to follow, because the future belongs
to the youths”
He said further, “We want our Southeastern brothers and sisters to
understand in unmistaken terms that Nigeria holds a lot of promise for
Igbo nation than the delusion of a non-existent Biafran state. And
luckily, the hour this realization has dawned on us has come at a time
Nigeria is blessed with a good leader, President Buhari. His actions and
utterances demonstrates a passion of love for every Nigerian,
regardless of tribe, religion or political affiliation. The Igbos of
Nigeria have no better time to have a resounding deal in Nigeria,
outside of the Buhari Presidency.
He under President Buhari, Ndi’gbo students have seen and felt the
impact of governance on security, roads construction/rehabilitation and
so on
He said, “We now sleep with our two eyes closed and our parents now do
business without the fear of dupes or molestation from criminal gangs.
We therefore seize this rare opportunity to reiterate our pledge of
loyalty to Mr. President and all constituted authorities in the country.
We profoundly salute the security architecture of Nigeria for doing a
good job of ridding the Southeast of criminal elements which suffocated
people of the region.”
He said, “We cannot deny that crime is very high in our land and we
require the presence of the Nigerian Military, the Police and even the
vigilante to secure us to transact our legitimate business and freely
move about with our money.”
“We need the tightest security in the Southeast, more than any part of
Nigeria and we are happy President Buhari has proved that he can protect
us from criminal vagabonds. We are glad he has complied with his oath
of office in securing the lives and properties of Nigerians. And we are
prime beneficiaries! Is this not true?
“We celebrated the 2016 yuletide in peace and with a near zero
incidence of acts of criminality because the Nigerian Police and where
necessary, Mr. President through his Service Chiefs secured our land.
Soldiers Operation Python Dance came to the rescue of the people. There
were no prowling kidnappers, abductors or armed robbers terrorizing us
last Christmas and we are truly grateful, as we look forward to same
peace this year.”

Please stop using MMM to gain cheap popularity. Leave us
alone and let us work without interference. I’m just astonished by your
irresponsibility and cynical attitude. Interests of millions of people, your
fellow citizens are at stake. Don’t you have any sympathy for them? Why are you
fueling hysteria around MMM and provoking a panic? Why are you doing this so
diligently and persistently, what is your purpose?
In fact, absolutely all your provocative and worthless
articles and “analyses” (I said “worthless” because you do not have any real
information about what happens in the System, and might have never had; you
simply invent everything, fabricate it) are merely negative: “MMM has
collapsed!!!.. MMM will not be working in January!!!..” etc. Are you
intentionally presenting all of it in such a manner and whipping up tension by
any means possible in order to increase the ratings of your publications and
attract attention to them? Don’t you care about people at all?
So, nothing has collapsed, and MMM will safely resume its
work in January, as announced. Suspension of work for holidays is a usual
thing, merely working moment, no more than that. It would have remained a
normal, just a part of the usual routine, and might have gone almost unnoticed
if it were not for your totally cynical and irresponsible attempts to advertise
yourself, create a scandal out of nowhere, and make the most of this news topic
in any possible way.
Again, leave MMM alone and let us
work. Nothing has collapsed, and MMM will perfectly resume its work in January.

MMM Nigeria has not, will not crash – Guiders
By Omobolanle Jonah Promoters of MMM Nigeria, known as Guiders have urged Nigerians to remain calm as the one month freezing of all accounts of the scheme is a measure adopted to ensure sustainability and stability of the scheme.

The system which entails the Providing Help (PH) and the Getting Help (GH) also assured that there is nothing to worry about since the ‘FROZEN ACCOUNT’ period is even the best time to provide help. Sergey Mavrodi of inventor MMM They also said that the accounts will continue to grow with a 50% more benefit on the amount staked or provided (PH). The guiders took to the MMM Nigeria website to douse tension and provide explanations on the one month account freezing. Read full explanation below: “Good morning Mavrodians. What we are seeing now is the only practical measure to protect MMM Nigeria from danger. “A lot of news of MMM crash this December has been on the social media and other news and gossip. This has really affected the system. There were heavy conspiracies by financial institutions to collapse the system. What happened to the system last week would have been worse if GH is allowed today. Despite the holiday bonus, many participants were ready to GH today. The PH is not commensurate to the GH and this is the fear created by sponsored fake news. “The truth remains that the mavros in the system are safe until they are unfrozen. Those who have PH in the system shouldn’t cancel them because since all green mavro are frozen no PH will be paired. “For those who understand the system, what has happened is a temporary measure to save the system and saving the system is saving our money. If we are allowed to GH, by next week there may be no enough PH to pair the GH then the worst will happen. “This is a kind of caution taken to avert danger. So our mavros are safe. I encourage those who want to PH to still do their PH. The maturity is January and doesn’t change anything by then the system is back and stronger. “Don’t lose hope, all of us have mavros in the system and let’s not use because of this little set back forget what MMM has done for us and will do more if the system is safeguarded. “I personally feel the same way as you but it’s better to save the system than lose everything. “Some people are complaining why the Guiders were not informed and my response is, if the Guiders were informed the system will crash in less than 10mins of the information.” “The way you received the news is the way we Guiders received the news but we have the training that such thing may happen if there is evidence of danger ahead. This show how firm and protective MMM is structured.” “Let’s be optimistic and positive. This is our community, let’s protect it.” This message was sent out by MMM Nigeria Guiders who identified themselves as Guider DonVal Amaechi and Guider Philip Awazi. Recall that members of the scheme woke up Tuesday morning with a shock message displaying on their screens indicating that all access to requesting of fund, (Getting help) had been frozen till January 14. This caused panic and confusion among the over three million member participants of the scheme.

Donald Trump ‘forced out of Oval Office for first year of presidency while renovations take place’
Donald Trump ‘forced out of Oval Office for first year of presidency while renovations take place’
Donald Trump, Barack Obama Appear at White House Together
US
PRESIDENT Barack Obama is apparently refusing to renovate the Oval
Office — and has instead decided to pass the buck to Donald Trump, who
may be forced to work somewhere else for a quarter of his term now as a
result of the numerous security upgrades that will be going on inside
the room.
“My understanding is that for the first
year of his time in office, President Trump will not have the Oval
Office,” former George W. Bush adviser Karl Rove told Fox News. The New York Post reports that according to Mr Rove, Mr Trump may likely have to spend up to a quarter of his term working out of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building across the street from the presidential seat of power — which is where President Richard Nixon recorded some his infamous White House tapes.
The decision to not renovate the Oval Office may ultimately come as a surprise to some, seeing as Mr Obama chose to redecorate the room completely in 2010 — adorning it with big, cushy sofas and striped wallpaper.
“It [looked] much more comfortable and less intimidating,” Elle Decor editor-in-chief Michael Boodro said at the time.
A “Deep Underground Command Centre” underneath the West Wing — which was first proposed in 1963 — has been in the works since 2010 and some believe it may be already completed.
Tornadoes hit Wales and Midlands
A number of tornadoes have struck parts of Wales and the Midlands, causing damaging to buildings and cars.
Winds of up to 94mph have been recorded in parts of Wales, with the seaside town of Aberystwyth bearing the brunt.Police said no injuries had been reported, though a caravan park in the area has been evacuated after up to 20 caravans were overturned.
The Met Office has issued a yellow severe weather warning of very strong winds moving eastwards across the UK.
Brought in by a squally cold front, BBC Weather says the high winds are expected to clear to the east through the course of Thursday afternoon.
'Sheets of metal'
Dyfed Powys Police said trees and roof tiles were also blown into roads, with several being forced to close.Thomas Scarrott, director of the Clarach Bay Holiday Village, near Aberystwyth, said around 15 to 20 caravans had been upended and overturned.
He said: "As I was walking out of the door the wind started to increase and it went from zero to take cover in seconds. My initial thought was it must have been a tornado."
He added: "The danger now is that the wind is blustery and blowing the debris. There are large sheets of metal blowing around. We're OK indoors."
As the high winds spread east, the Grinshill Animal Rescue Centre near Shrewsbury reported "major damage".
Posting photos on Facebook, Kate Aspinall said there was no roof left on the kennels, after a tree fell on it causing damage.
She said: "Dogs and cats are safe thank God. We are OK, a little wet and wind swept."
