MILWAUKEE — At least one person was shot Sunday night as unrest continued in the wake of a fatal police shooting over the weekend in Milwaukee's Sherman Park neighborhood, authorities said.
Less than 24 hours after an uprising that captured the national spotlight, disorder hit the city for a second night Sunday. Police moved in before 11 p.m. CT to disperse a crowd at Sherman Boulevard and Burleigh Street after protesters started throwing objects. That's when officers said they received reports of shots fired.
Officers rescued an 18-year-old male shooting victim, police said. First responders took him to the hospital with a serious gunshot injury. There were multiple reports of shots fired, as well as reports of a car fire. Police said they made multiple arrests and that officers were restoring order to the area.
Just after midnight, lines of police holding riot gear began moving down Burleigh Street telling people they were in an unlawful assembly. Several protesters were handcuffed and taken into custody after they refused repeated requests to leave the area. At least one officer was injured in the unrest.
Early Monday, a group of police boarded two buses and pulled back from the area as tensions subsided.
